Dog Training

At age 50 I had accumulated 356 reasons NOT to own a dog, so when the fateful day at the Animal Rescue League arrived I was more than a little apprehensive. The 65 lb, 7 month old Shepherd/Husky chose us well. Determined to be the best pet owners possible, we enrolled in an 8-week dog training program.

In an echo filled room with 10 other dogs our's was the loudest and worst behaved. Our resignation to failure turned to hopefulness when the trainer assured us that next week she would show us how to stop the uncontrolled whining and barking, with a lemon. "Lemoning" the dog was one of the most impressive techniques I learned. As soon as the dog started barking the trainer squeezed a significant dose of lemon juice into his opened mouth. The barking ceased as his lips curled and puckered as you might imagine from such a sour squirt. Only one more application was required until the dog knew the phrase "I'll get the lemon". After that he puckered at the phrase and stopped whatever it was he was doing.

"People training" is really what dog training is all about. We want our dogs to be well behaved, but without proper knowledge of dog behaviour we try to reason with them as we would reason with children. Time spent with a professional dog trainer will forever change the way you look at dogs. Our dog is now well behaved, and defies 354 of my reasons not to own a dog, and the remaining two reasons are an easy trade-off for the tremendous joy he brings to our family.

I went through the training with our first dog and then after that was able to train our other dogs as they came along. I never heard about the lemon trick. I'll have to try that on our yappy pup. Thank you for passing that tip along.
